Who Discovered North America?

Many people believe that Christopher Columbus was the first European to visit North America. This is not true, however, as there were plenty of people in the region thousands of years ago. Despite the founding myth that the continent was sparsely populated by nomadic tribes, recent research suggests that early Americans had complex societies. The result would be an America much different than it is today.

The Vikings are one theory that suggests that the Vikings were the first Europeans to arrive in the area. According to some, the Vikings were the first Europeans to discover North America, but there is some evidence to suggest that Native peoples were the first to visit the continent. While Vikings did not “discover” America, they did come to the continent much earlier than Columbus. This means that Native Americans were able to live on the continent hundreds of thousands of years before Columbus did. As the Spanish colonies increased, Indigenous populations declined. Because they were not immune to European diseases, they died in the process.
